A Note for Incoming Students about Placement Exams
Incoming students new to IU Bloomington should be aware that you may be required to take placement examinations prior to registration.
Math Placement Exams
You are required to take the online Math Placement Exam, known as ALEKS, to determine which undergraduate math course is the best fit for your abilities. You only need to take the online math placement exam once, but you can choose to take it up to three times. You will have the opportunity to improve your score by taking the online tutorials that are built into the ALEKS system. This unproctored exam must be taken prior to your New Student Orientation appointment. Find more information about the Math Placement Exam on the College of Arts and Sciences website.
Foreign Language Placement Exams
The online Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE) tests your current knowledge of certain foreign languages. It is required of all incoming first-year and most transfer students at the undergraduate level regardless of Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) scores or their academic plans. You are exempt from the FLPE only if you have never studied the foreign language you intend to pursue. This unproctored exam must be taken prior to your New Student Orientation appointment.
