Policy Statement
1. Good Academic Standing – An undergraduate student is in good academic standing at the end of each semester when the student has:
a. a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 2.000 (on a 4-point scale);
b. a semester GPA of 2.000; and
c. met, if applicable, the standards for good academic standing set by the student’s academic unit. This information can be found in the academic unit’s bulletin.
2. Academic Watch
a. An undergraduate student is placed on academic watch by their academic unit if:
i. the student’s semester GPA falls below 2.000; or
ii. the student qualifies for academic watch under standards set by the student’s academic unit, if applicable. This information can be found in the academic unit’s bulletin.
b. If the student also qualifies to be placed on academic alert under section 3, then the student is placed on academic alert instead of academic watch.
c. The goal of academic watch is to notify a student:
i. of concerns about their academic performance; and
ii. that they must seek support and address academic challenges to return to good academic standing. Academic advisors can assist with the support services needed.
d. Academic watch appears on the student’s advising record and not on the student's transcript.
3. Academic Alert
a. An undergraduate student is placed on academic alert by their academic unit if:
i. the student’s cumulative GPA falls below 2.000; or
ii. the student qualifies for academic alert under standards set by the student’s academic unit, if applicable. This information can be found in the academic unit’s bulletin.
b. The goal of academic alert is to notify a student:
i. of major concerns about their academic performance;
ii. that they are at risk of academic dismissal, as described in sections 4 and 5; and
iii. B33-2024 that they must seek increased support and address academic challenges to return to good academic standing. Academic advisors can assist with the support services needed.
c. Academic alert appears on the student’s advising record and not on the student’s transcript.
4. Academic Unit Dismissal – An undergraduate student on academic alert can be academically dismissed by their academic unit if the student does not return to good academic standing by the end of the next semester in which the student is enrolled.
a. Academic unit dismissal is based on the criteria established by the unit and available in the unit’s bulletin. Extenuating circumstances for a dismissal can be considered by the academic unit’s Dean’s office.
b. The academic unit will notify the student and the Office of Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (OVPUE) of the student’s dismissal. The notification will include information about campus advising or other relevant resources.
c. Academic unit dismissal appears on the student’s advising record and not on the student’s transcript.
5. Indiana University – Bloomington (IUB) Dismissal - An undergraduate student who:
a. has been dismissed from their academic unit;
b. is not eligible for another major; and
c. has a cumulative GPA below a 2.000; will be academically dismissed from IUB by OVPUE. IUB dismissal appears on the advising record and not on the student’s transcript.
6. Academic Reinstatement –
a. Each academic unit may establish criteria for academic reinstatement.
b. An undergraduate student academically dismissed from IUB may seek reinstatement to IUB and an academic unit through OVPUE. OVPUE will coordinate with the relevant academic unit. The academic unit will determine eligibility for reinstatement under the unit’s criteria.
c. An undergraduate student academically dismissed from a unit, but not academically dismissed from IUB, may seek reinstatement to a unit, if permitted by the unit.

This policy harmonizes undergraduate academic standing terminology and procedures across academic units.
